Maastricht is a charming city located in the southern part of the Netherlands. As we strolled around the city, we could feel the history and culture seeping through every street and building. One highlight of our visit was the local brewery, where we had a taste of the delicious local beer. Another unique spot was the Boekhandel Dominicanen, an old church turned into a bookstore. We then headed to the Vrijthof, the central square of Maastricht, where we admired the beautiful architecture. In the evening, we visited the Wyck neighborhood to experience the local nightlife. We found a cozy hotel in Maastricht that fit our budget and preferences.

On day two, it was time to say goodbye to Maastricht and head out to the countryside. After at thirty minute drive we arrived at our first stop: The Drielandenpunt. This tri-border point of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany is a unique experience in Europe. Standing in three different countries at the same time is something we’ll never forget. The tower and monument at the Three Nations Point served as a symbol of the close relationship and between the three neighboring nations.

After a quick break for coffee and Vlaai, the local pastry from Limburg that is a must try, it was time to start our hike. The Limburg countryside was breathtaking, with rolling hills, picturesque villages, and winding roads. We spent the rest of the day exploring the countryside on foot and by bike.

Hiking trough the countryside

Some of the popular routes we took included the Julius Crossing, which took us through the picturesque village of Swalmen and the rolling hills of Limburg, and the Meuse Cycle Route, which offered breathtaking views of the Limburg countryside. We also walked a part of the Pieterpad Hiking Trail, a 500 km trail that runs from the southern tip of Limburg to the northern coast, and experienced the beauty of Limburg on foot.
